Rhombs of calcite with a lustrous black coating known as "stilpnosiderite", on a matrix of dark grey limestone.
This material is known locally as "coal mine calcite", according to Betty Sheffler from whom this rock was purchased years ago.
Betty had said this specimen was from a coal mine near Lovilia, Iowa (Monroe County).
Size: Matrix is ca. 5.5 x 5 x 3 cm; rhombic crystals are ca. 3-4 mm.
